The interesting roster is fun though, and they are a good faction to play for a change of pace from the more traditional Hellenistic factions. Once you add a couple provinces to your territory, you can snowball rapidly, gobbling up the former Seleucid satrapies with relative ease. Games tend to follow a pretty similar structure, and being located on the edge of the game map makes it almost too easy, as you don’t ever really have to watch your back. It’s what makes every game different and unique though, as the various shifting alliances leads to interesting opportunities that are always different game to game.īactria, to me, is the least fun of the bunch. Pontus and Pergamon can be tricky, as you have to play somewhat opportunistically. If Epirus doesn’t present a major challenge, Athens and Sparta always inevitably betray me after conquering them, so rushing the barbarian kingdoms in Thracia is an absolute must if you want to be prepared for war in Greece. The toughest of these in my opinion is Macedon, their starting position can be pretty tough. Sometimes to add a little challenge to the game, I’ll seek peace with the Seleucids and conquer the rest of northeast Africa and then move into the Arabian peninsula, or go after Greece/Asia Minor. Once Egypt is yours, the game’s basically over at that point as you become unstoppable.Įgypt can be a lot of fun though too, and I like playing various campaigns with them. Egypt is fairly easy to conquer and serves as an excellent breadbasket. with infantry, pretty much any of the barbarian factions will do, with units like the Chosen Axemen, Golden Band and Lombard Berserkers of the Alemanni, Burgundii and Lombardi, Gallowglasses and Hounds of Coulann of. In my opinion they have the best unit roster in the game and Syria is an insanely rich province once developed. Probably in my top 3 Rome 2 campaigns of all time). My personal choice is the Seleucids. Iolei (Punched my way to Carthage, then used it's port to conquer the rest of the map. Korinthos (they all play the same honestly, though Athens has a bit more of a challenge)Īrevaci (Confederated 90% of Spain without fighting a single battle until turn 80, then steamrolled the map) Rome (only faction that's really that fun IMO) Pompey's Rome (most difficult faction, but even then once you get the other three to go at each other it's easy pickings) Lusitani (once you get control of Spain, the real challenge begins) Iceni (good faction if you're new to Barbarians) Getae (Challenging and fun, plus there aren't many other Dacian factions meaning your army stands out) Pontus (Always been a Pontus fan since release, great faction and options for expansion) It addresses lingering issues that CA never got around to fixing, like the erroneous "gained a Household member" messages, where the game tells you a character has a new Household member, but it doesn't appear on the character or in the Household pool (sometimes because its not actually a Household member for that faction.)Ĭolchis (very fun, I love underdog factions)Įpirus (Best start in the game, hands down) If the AI is unfriendly or hates a faction they're more likely to declare war (with an increasing chance as the relations between you get worse,) but if they like or love you they're less likely to.Īthanasios' Ultimate Fixes is more an unofficial patch. Difficulty also comes from the factions you play and how you play, for example I often play smaller factions, rarely autoresolve, and try to build semi-realistic themed armies rather than going for all elite doomstacks, even in late game.Īs for the mods, A More Aggressive AI does increase the campaign challenge as there tends to be more wars and the AI tends to be more aggressive in pursuing their goals in the war as he's tweaked their priorities. To me the current patch (Patch 20/Ancestral Update) is the best version for campaign and battles. Are those campaings harder with the patches you mention?I was more just giving an idea of when I played them, as things have changed quite a lot over the years.
